Jake glanced down at his fuel meter nervously, watching the needle dive ever further past the empty mark. He cursed himself for deciding to take the “scenic” route when he was running low but never anticipated he would have to go so far without even seeing the faintest hint of civilization, let alone anything resembling a gas station.

Almost as if in response to his concerns, the engine in his car starts gasping for fuel, sputtering and spouting until finally dying completely.

“Fuck!” he shouts at no one but his own stupidity and reaching for his phone. One quick glance later was followed promptly by another even more frustrated cursing. He tossed the phone back into the seat…not even the faintest signal could reach it this far out in the middle of nowhere. After a moment of unbridled furious yelling he settles on his next course of action, walking until he either gets a signal or finds someone to help him. With one more frustrated huff, he exits the car and starts walking down the “scenic” gravel road. His feet crunched on the rocks with every step.

After a few hours of walking, his feet were screaming and the warm afternoon weather was quickly transitioning into a cooler evening one. Being the ever-unprepared person he is, Jake simply cursed his luck again as he shivered slightly. His phone was now almost dead from constant checking for a signal and there was still nothing but a handful of trees every so often, wide open fields and the seemingly endless gravel road.

As the sun sank lower and lower into the horizon, it was getting harder and harder to see where he was going. Jake looked around nervously as he was starting to get worried for his safety being out after dark when he noticed a faint glimmer of something in the distance. A light, barely noticeable in the treeline not far from him. Without really thinking through the decision he decides to depart from the road and head toward the light, hoping that it would at least provide him some form of shelter from the darkness quickly taking over.

His spirits lifted even more when he broke through the tree line and saw that the light was coming from the window of a small farmhouse. He slowly approached the front door and knocked, quickly realizing that he should have at least thought about the potential of the owner being some sort of crazed weirdo before doing so. Right before his mind started spinning the worst-case scenario, the door opened and he was greeted by a rather confused middle-aged man staring at him.

“Um, hello? Can I help you son?” the man’s voice relayed a sense of kindness that put Jake at ease slightly. He stared at the man for a moment and started talking before he really thought about what to say.

“Yes, hi. I was driving down the road over there and my car ran out of gas and my phone was out of service so I had to start walking but it started getting dark and I saw the light in your window and I was hoping that…”

The man laughed at Jake’s word vomit, understanding the situation and ushered him inside.

“Yeah, that happens a lot more than it should. That road is notorious around these parts for bypassing almost every town around these parts. Why don’t you come inside, you look like you could do with a warm meal and some rest, as it turns out, I just finished making dinner.”

Jake’s stomach unleashed a loud rumble at the mention of food and the man smiled.

“Yeah, that would be great, thank you. I haven’t eaten anything since this morning.” he stepped inside the house. His nose was immediately hit with the aroma of a freshly cooked meal. He looked around the small house, noticing how minimalistic it was. A small cough lined one wall, a recliner on the other with a small fireplace on the far wall. The old wooden floor creaked as he stepped on it.

“The washroom is through that door over there, go get yourself cleaned up and I’ll make you up a plate.”
Creaking wood followed him the entire way to the bathroom, which was equally simplistic. After a quick trip to the toilet, he settled in front of the sink and let the warm water run over his hands. A few creaks outside the door signalled to him that the man was waiting for him to come out. A few splashes on his face later to make sure he was presentable and he walked back out.

The man had set up a small tray by the couch with a plate of food sitting on top of it. The man was sitting in the recliner opposite the couch.

“Apologies, but I never introduced myself. My name’s William Montgomery, but most people just call me Will.”
Jake introduced himself as well and sat down to eat. The two made small talk at first but quickly started having a real conversation after finding out they had a handful of things in common. Will was surprisingly sharp considering how isolated he was and how simple his home was. The two talked for quite some time before they realized how late it had become. Far too late for Jake to get his travel situation taken care of tonight.
“Well Jake, as much as I hate to say it. I think we’ll have to get you taken care of in the morning. I don’t have a guest room in the house and no offence, but I’m not too keen on letting a stranger sleep in my living room. Out in the barn is my son’s old room though. Not the most homely of places but it’s got a warm bed, if you don’t mind it housing a few animals.”

Jake wasn’t about to complain about a warm bed, considering that just sitting on the couch for a few hours was already making his body ache, but the idea of sleeping in a barn full of animals was a little offputting. Will must have noticed a look of dismay and quickly spoke.

“Now don’t worry about too much, my son wasn’t too keen on the idea of being in the barn either so he took some steps to make it more liveable. It’s all finished and separated by a solid wall that keeps most of the sounds and smells out. It’s actually quite a comfy little place out there. Come with me, I’ll show you.”

Will led Jake out of the house and over to a rather large barn just behind it. Jake was surprised slightly about how he had not noticed it behind the house earlier but just shrugged it off as being too worried about following the light to the house itself. With a little push, Will slid the door to the barn open and ushered Jake inside.

As Jake entered the barn, he immediately noted how clean it was, he couldn’t help but wonder how Will had kept it so tidy all by himself. He had expected a dusty old barn that reeked of livestock but what greeted him was the opposite. The floors, while not immaculate, were clean of debris as if they had been just recently swept. All the tools and equipment looked equally well kept, a far cry from the cliche horror barn his imagination had conjured up.

“Wow, you must work your butt off to keep this place clean. I’ll admit I was expecting something much more…” he tried to find a word that wouldn’t offend Will but the thought just kind of trailed off when he heard the man laugh.

“I told you it was a pretty nice place in here. Admittedly I spend more time in here than I do in the house, but I don’t do it all myself. My son, while he was still at home, was always telling me I needed some of those drone things that people have now to help out. Even bought one to show me how nice it would be. He works for DroneTech now, as some type of consultant or something like that, but every so often he comes by with a new one or upgrades the old ones. Handy things I suppose, I don’t use them too much. Mainly they just stay in the barn and keep things tidy. I handle most of the actual work.”

Jake nodded, he had heard of DroneTech before, their technology had sweeping the markets since they were announced. Robotic servants are capable of both basic learning and problem-solving. They could capably handle most mundane tasks but so far their applications were fairly limited due to their cost.

“Oh yeah? I gotta say, I never expected to run into a drone this far out in the country. You’re just full of surprises.” Jake smiled politely, he wanted to remark about how he couldn’t believe that such advanced, and expensive, tools.

Properly handled, the man could have almost his entire farm handled with very little hassle. The rest of the barn was fairly mundane, filled with various tools in one area, and a handful of animal stalls with livestock in them, nothing was too out of the ordinary until they made their way through a small archway leading to a back area.

Standing rigid along the wall were a handful of drones, but unlike the androgynous human models he had always seen in posters and advertisements, these were much more…stylized. The drones were very clearly made to appear as muscular anthropomorphic horsemen. Each of their muscles is clearly defined in their tight rubber skin. He couldn’t help but stare in awe at their chiselled chest and abdomen. Travelling down to the large bulge in between their muscled legs, all the way down to their feet, which were shiny black hooves instead of feet.

As the two approached the line of drones lights suddenly flashed on, as if they had tripped a motion sensor. Jake saw that the chest of the drone had lit up with an ID number with a barcode underneath as well as a rather large symbol of a lock on the bulge between their legs. These drones were unlike anything he had ever seen before.

“Those look incredibly high-end? You said they were gifts from your son? He must be very high up in corporate DroneTech. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything close to these before.”, he asked slightly in a manner that relayed how impressed he was with them, before he could think about it he added, “But I do have to ask, what’s up with the lock on their….uh…well you know.”

Will looked at them and sighed, clearly embarrassed by the question,

“Honestly, I have no idea, my son said they were used for testing various ideas. I’m sure you can probably assume what kind of thing that particular one was for. Most of the so-called features they have are lost on me, wouldn’t even know where to begin figuring out what all these things can do so I just leave them to do whatever my son set them up to do. Here’s the room you’ll be staying in.”

Jake pried his eyes from the rubber drones and over to the door as Will pushed it open. Inside the room was fairly well furnished for where it was located. A rather cosy-looking bed was all he could see (and all that really mattered) from the bedroom. Before he could say anything he heard Will say,

“Alrighty, well I’m going to let you get yourself rest now. Whenever you get up in the morning, just come to the house and we’ll get you all gassed up and on your way.”

Jake nodded and thanked the man before walking into the bedroom as Will headed back towards the entrance to the barn. As he walked into the room he looked around a bit better. The room was fairly well kept (from the drones most likely). The bed lined one wall and the other wall had a small desk and a chair, next to the bed was a doorframe that appeared to be some sort of closet. As he swung the door around to close it, in the corner of his eye, he saw what looked to be something large and black standing behind the door.

Hanging on the wall behind the door was a large piece of what appeared to be latex as well as a rubber horse mask that looked identical to the heads of the drones outside his room. He examined the material more closely, it appeared to be a suit made entirely out of some sort of latex.

The material was surprisingly soft and although it was made of rubber, it seemed to want to cling to him like it was full of static. Inspecting it further he saw that there was a small zipper tab by the neck and, while he couldn’t see any actual zipper, assumed that it was hidden and meant to help aid with entry.

“This is so weird, but I guess if the guy works for DroneTech, he would have some prototypes lying around.”, Jake said to himself, trying to reason as to why such a thing would be in a random barn in the middle of nowhere.

He turned his attention away from the suit and over to the mask. A thick black rubber horse mask with blacked-out mirrored lenses instead of eyes. The mouth seemed to just be moulded rubber with a rather odd O-shaped opening. The sides of the muzzle had a small metallic port to seemingly allow for ventilation. Jake curiously plucked the mask off the wall to examine it more closely.

The mask was smooth, almost slick in his hands. The mask itself was hollow with the rubber on the back and neck being split down the center by a small zippered opening. He pulled the sides open to get a better look at the inside of the mask. He could see that the lenses on the outside were almost completely semi-opaque, he put his face closer to the mask trying to see if he could see through them. Something inside the mask just detected him because suddenly the lenses on the inside of the mask lit up brightly.

Jake found himself reflexively trying to block his eyes from the light but quickly adjusted to it, seeing that the lenses somehow doubled as screens. He watched curiously, holding the mask back a bit as they started displaying a solid stream of information as though they were booting up.

“Weird,” Jake muttered as he watched.

Suddenly the screens flickered and Jake could see it was playing some sort of video, but it was very garbled, like trying to watch TV with a very weak signal. He brought the mask a bit closer in an attempt to see what the lenses were displaying. He could just barely make out the occasional shape or word. He kind of lost sense of himself while he stared intently at the flashing static inside the mask. Even though he could barely make out what it was showing, something kept him watching and also seemed to be rather relaxing.

He kept staring at the flicking lights inside the mask, holding it in his hands. Something about it made him want to watch more, it made him feel really good to just stand there holding the mask and watch the display. He felt so good that his dick has hardened in his jeans and was now straining tightly against its denim prison.

Taking the mask in one hand, he mindlessly reached down and rubbed his dick, fumbling to open his pants with one hand. With little effort, his cock sprung free. He gripped his member as a wave of pleasure washed through him. He kept watching the flashing lights and stroking his throbbing member.

He heard himself say something out loud as a massive spurt of precum erupted from his cock and had a sudden realization of his surroundings. He pulled his gaze away from the mask and looked down at his cock and precum-covered fingers.

“What the fuck am I doing?!” he asked loudly to himself as he tossed the mask onto the desk nearby, “It’s been a hell of a day. I must be out of it…” he rubbed his eyes and shook his head to clear the fog in his brain, “I think I should just get to bed.”

He glanced back at the mask for a second and rubbed his cock once more but sighed and laid down in the bed, quickly drifting off to sleep. A nice, relaxing, pleasurable sleep. While he slept, he dreamt.
